All you have to do is give up your right to drive? Time Magazine

This is the cover story on the latest Time Magazine. My response to this statement would be:

"Horseshit!"

Why? because of the following reasons (they are talking about all computer driven cars with no human controls at all obviously.

Why don't I want this?

Here are the real reasons that actually have nothing to do with humans driving cars or not:

How would you like your computer, tablet or smartphone to drive your car for you instead of you?
How about if it did this after you dropped your IPhone in your bathtub, toilet, sink or hot tub?

(I have dropped more than one cell phone in a hot tub by the way.)
also, a zip lock plastic baggy if you are outside in a rain storm or snow storm in your hot tub is great because often you can still use your smartphone through it and still keep it waterproof too. But, still don't set it in the water or water could leak through the baggy.

But, the main point here is that it will Never be safe to not have controls to take over your self driving car in an emergency. Computers are fallible like people are.

So, even if the software is working fine
Even if the hardware is working fine
Something can still go wrong
What if one of the external movement sensors gets covered over with mud, rain snow or somehting else and this sensor doesn't pick up a child walking by or a mother and child walking in front of the car?

What if there is a solar storm and all or some GPS satellites that the vehicle navigates by are knocked out.

This happens all the time during solar storms where GPS satellites get confused and turn upside down from being fried by the solar storm. And while they are upside down they don't work at all.

What happens when all contact is lost with GPS or motion sensors of outside events around the car?

What happens when moisture gets into the electronics making decisions about when to stop or go or navigate?

Any problem your computer or smartphone can have the inner workings of your self driving car can have too at each and any moment.

They are not infallible. And who is going to pay when your self driving cars kill someone outside or inside the car? You? the manufacturer? Who?

Who is going to be liable for those deaths?

And believe me there will be deaths just as many or more than are dying from air bags right now here in the U.S. and around the world made by Takata
