This explains quite well how to protect yourself from EMPs

Protecting Yourself From an EMP

I noticed a lot of you reading the article at the above word button. So, I took the time to more carefully read this article. I saw why so many of you were interested in it.

It explains in a lot of detail what actually happens in different types of EMPs (Electromagnetic Pulses).

For example, both planes and cars are natural Faraday cages. So, when lightning strikes an airplane in flight the natural faraday cage which a plane naturally is usually protects the passengers from bodily harm.

The same is true of a car because the rubber tires act as an insulator and often protect the passengers from lightning striking a car which it almost never does unless someone has their foot touching the ground while getting in or out of the car and then usually they die as the lightning travels through them.

So, it is mentioned that (in lightning strikes) planes and cars are often safe. However, you cannot be completely sure in an EMP because this often is very different in it's effects from a lightning strike.

It mentions that the most vulnerable electrical devices are computer chips and computer hard drives in an EMP (of whatever kind it is) for example.

It mentions how to protect yourself and all your devices by staying 8 feet away from anything metal when an EMP occurs so you don't die from it too.

It says that only a 20 megaton nuclear explosion 200 miles above the center of the U.S. would permanently end the usefulness of most everything electrical in the continental United States.

And a large enough solar flare could do about the same thing. However, I don't think people would directly die from a solar flare unless it set a house on fire through setting paper or other objects on fire. So, likely you could have many houses catch on fire from paper catching on fire near metal objects for example during an EMP all over one or more countries even during an 1859 Carrington Event if it occured today or later.

However, if the computer chips and hard drives in planes or cars were fried you might see 60,000 to 600,000 people die in passenger plane crashes and about 1 1/2 million people die in car crashes wherever their computer chips or hard drives fried.

The biggest problem on earth would be self driving vehicles. In other more human and mechanically driven vehicles since steering and brakes would not be directly affected (except power steering and power braking, most drivers would be physically strong enough to keep control of their cars and come to a safe stop when the engine stopped running from no electricity to spark plugs by shifting into neutral from drive or manual shift or pushing in the clutch on a manual shift and braking to a safe stop wherever they were located. However, this happening to thousands or even millions of people in traffic at high speed  at the same time could cause many deaths and complications in itself.
