However, people who had been there and lived through this would likely have been too traumatized by a movie like this before. Why?
This will give away elements of the movie so if you are going to watch it in the future don't read this:
For example, Jojo Rabbit's Resistence mother passing out leaflets and getting hanged for it during the movie played by
Scarlett Johansson as Jojo Rabbit's mother.
Another reality is JOJO being put down for not killing a pretty bunny rabbit then he goes out into the forest and gets courage from an imaginary Hitler who counsels him and runs back to the Hitler Youth where he couldn't kill the rabbit and grabs a German Hand Grenade pulls the pin and throws it but the grenade bounces off a tree and lands next to him and blows up and scars his face and makes his leg not work right ever after.
Then his mother kicks the German officer in charge of her son in the Hitler Youth in the balls and knocks him down which everyone understands so she isn't punished for this reaction to her son's injuries because he is only 10 years old.
All these things would have been in their own way too horrifying for most people to deal with who actually lived through all of this. Only younger people who were not completely traumatized by all this can deal with this at this point in a useful way. Even I and my wife were slightly traumatized from watching this movie with everyone we met who actually was there during our lives.
My wife was so traumatized the next morning after watching this movie and said to me, "Why did they kill Jojo's mother and hang her like that?"
I said, "Yes. That really happened historically by the way."
She said, "Why would they hang someone just for passing out anti-government fliers?"
I said, "That's just what happened then. There's no real logic to it when you think about it."
However, as I thought about this more my cousin was born in 1942 and so doesn't remember 1942 to 1945 very much and most people aren't much older than he and his wife now unless they are in their 80s and 90s or 100s. So, basically about 75% or more of people alive in 1940 to 1945 are not alive now so this is mainly why a movie like this could be made now in this way and be successful
I was 2 in 1950 but remember 1950, especially driving cars and standing on the back seat of my father's 1941 Blue Buick that had been his brother's who didn't come back from WWII as a pilot. My father drove his brother's car in memory of him until1956 when he bought a brand new Century Buick, a 1956 model.
