There was this constant TERROR in people especially after the Horrors of World War II and just about every family including ours had lost someone in World War II in the fighting then. So, there was this hysteria in people regarding Atom Bombs and Hydrogen bombs that has passed mostly now into something entirely different, even though now I think people are now incredibly unrealistic about all this, especially if they didn't live through world War II or it's after math. I was born in 1948 so I grew up watching horrific War Chronicles as a boy and because of this I fully expected to die in a nuclear blast or as a soldier in a foreign land. This wasn't much of a future to look forward to either by the way for me.
But, luckily, God had other plans for me than that.
So, when Dr. Strangelove came out it was such a relief to laugh at that movie and after this many parodies of War in the form of movies came out that were either complete paraodies or very cynical parodies like Catch 22.

This was one of the best of the very cynical horrific ones where at one point a man standing on the ground is ground up by a propeller of an oncoming plane. That's the image that I have kept from this very funny, horrific and cynical movie and story.
I guess the point is to be able to laugh at the complete insanity of war can be very therapeutic and was for me in the 1960s and 1970s, especially because God allowed me not to be drafted into the Army and to die or be permanently PTSD like many people I knew were. (they were either killed, wounded, or PTSD for life) that were around my age. In fact more people died my age born 1948 in the Viet Nam war than any other age then.
