Is actually based upon "What you put your attention upon you become".
Why is this true?
When you work on generating compassion the first person to benefit from your compassion is you.
As you love others that love goes to yourself first on the way to others.
So, who is the main person who benefits from compassion for oneself and others?
That's right! You are.
So, from this point of view learning to generate compassion for yourself and all others saves your life, increases your health (both physical and mental too) every moment you do this.
Conversely:
When you hate others or yourself it is a form of slow or quick suicide depending upon the person.
So, do you want to torture yourself and die young?
Or do you want to learn to generate compassion for yourself and all mankind and all beings everywhere instead and live a really long fulfilling happy life?
The choice is always yours.
