The fire on Highway one in Palo Colorado Canyon isn't a surprise because of High winds from the Sierras to the SF Coast and south from there

The Santa Lucia mountains were one of the places where winds could be above 50 or 60 mph last night. So, when I just found out just now that there is a new fire at Palo Colorado Canyon along Highway 1 I wasn't really surprised. When you have gusts that high anywhere even though we have had some rain in December it could bring down power lines various places and start fires. IN high winds it is usually power lines to blame when winds or tree limbs bring them down various places in California.

The article said that the smoke is visible from Santa Cruz which is across the Bay from where Palo Colorado is. The road from Rio Road south 21 miles has been closed "Highway 1 and this wil likely make many tourists unhappy because of the very remote nature of that drive between Monterey and Morro Bay is likely the most remote part of the California coast. It's one reason why parts of Highway 1 fall into the ocean almost every winter and it shuts down the highway from one month to 6 months almost every year now from storms and fires combined. First the fires burn away the underbrush and trees and then there is nothing to hold Highway 1 from going into the sea when it rains hard.

It's unfortunate that the fire is near Palo Colorado canyon because many people live there among the giant Redwoods in that Canyon.
