The whole Pacific Ocean is like a big bathtub that someone dropped a big rock into:

What this means is that currents and waves from Tonga are going to be sloshing around for hours, days, or longer so being near the ocean anywhere in the Pacific Basin is iffy if you are close to the ocean. In a boat you want to be offshore somewhere where it shouldn't affect you much. But, if you are coming into harbor you might have to watch out so you don't damage your boat for awhile on the currents that could arise at any time now.

And at the beaches along the coast of California you have to be expecting the unexpected and maybe looking at the ocean is better than getting too near the ocean right now until it all settles down hopefully within 24 to 48 hours.

For example, in Santa Cruz marinas they had a 6 foot difference in water elevation which is more than enough to break mooring lines on many boats which they are going to drift free and have to be rescued or they might be damaged against other boats or walking areas near the beach. So, if you have a boat tied up you might want someone to check it to make sure it is still where it was whether that be Alaska or San Diego now.
