It's harder for people to survive in the U.S. these days especially if they are young (under 40)

I am hearing more horror stories about people working hard and still not able to buy a house here in California and both have good jobs and a child. So, they really want to own a house and both are in their late 30s. However, the county they live in doesn't allow tracks of land to be sold under 5 acres in the Country. In Siskiyou county where I owned 2 1/2 acres it was easy to buy land for not much then in 1980. But, now land all over the state is prohibitively expensive for most people. One of the biggest changes with remote land is solar cells on roofs so they don't need to have electric lines to their homes now if they have a well. Of course some places like from the Oregon Border down to say Big Sur solar energy isn't going to work very well if you live along the coast simply because it is over cast a lot from Oregon to Big Sur along the coast much of the year so you don't get enough direct sunlight to charge your batteries (whatever kind you have) from Tesla Batteries to whatever. A good friend of mine lives off the grid and is entirely either solar or batteries or turns on his gasoline generator in the neighborhood I built an A Frame on 2 1/2 acres of land starting in 1980. We owned the land until 1989 when we moved to Hawaii then.

The other problem in California is by 2017 you might buy up to a 1 million dollar house if you were making 100,000 a year (both spouses together). However, now to get a loan for a house to buy a 1 million dollar home in California you would need a 400,000 dollar income or more(both spouses working).

So, many people in California might not ever be able to buy a home here if they just make regular wages unless a relative loaned them money or something in order to buy their first home.
