It was much scarier living in the 1950s and 1960s than now. Why?

Because World war II was still pretty recent and there were many people with severe PTSD from World war II alive then in the U.S. On top of this nuclear weapons including Hydrogen bombs were brand new and no one really believed we could go more than 5 or 10 years without blowing the world up.

Dr. STrangelove was a comedy that helped people to cope better or "How I stopped worrying and learned to Love the Bomb". It was actually a very helpful 1964 parody of what many people actually were like then. For example, my father believed then: "Better Dead than Red" which many people did then and I was taught to think like this too.

If you want to feel more how crazy it was then watch the cult movie:

U.S. Air Force General Jack Ripper goes completely insane, and sends his bomber wing to destroy the U.S.S.R. He thinks that the communists are conspiring to pollute the "precious bodily fluids" of the American people.
