Another closer workaround missing the Hughes fire both north and south is 14 and 138

If you are heading north from Los Angeles area on I-5 you can take 14 and then 138 to get around the fire and back onto Interstate 5. If you are coming south over the Grapevine on 5 you can take 138 just south of Gorman and drive over to 14 and then south which should intersect with Interstate 5.

So, this is one workaround without having to go over to 101. However, often 138 is just a two lane road if I remember correctly so if there is a lot of people doing this it could get backed up but I think 14 is mostly a freeway if I remember correctly driving these two roads.

At present Ventura College had to shut down because of smoke and the smoke has gone out to sea and has reached Santa Cruz Island as well.

At least 20,000 people have been evacuated so far but likely many more will have to evacuate soon because of spot fires jumping roads in the high winds and setting new fires with blowing embers.

Mostly this is a time to rescue people so they don't die from fire or smoke inhalation. The problem with more remote places like where this fire is burning is that there are few roads to evacuate on so if you get boxed in by the fire somewhere this could be bad. So, hopefully people have 4 wheel drives and know how to use them or have off road motorcycles to get out of there quickly if they need to.
