Just thinking "I'm special" is just not going to cut it in this life.
You have to be an opportunist and by being an opportunist you use whatever God gives you.
There is a joke from the 1950s about this that you likely have heard:
There was a man who was very religious and was in a flood on top of his barn which hadn't been washed away by the flood yet.
A man went by on a log and said, "Jump on my log with me so you can live."
The man said: "No. God's going to save me."
another man came by on a home made raft and said: " "Jump on my raft with me so you can live!"
The man said: "No. God's going to save me."
Another person came by in a rowboat and said: " "Jump on my rowboat with me so you can live!"
The man said: "No. God's going to save me."
Another person came by in a motor boat and said, " "Jump on my motor boat with me so you can live!"
The man said: "No. God's going to save me."
Another person came by in a helicopter and said,
" Grab the rope to my helicopter so you can live!"
The man said: "No. God's going to save me."
Well at this point after the helicopter left the man drowned when his barn washed away.
When he met God at the Pearly Gates he said, "God! Why didn't you save me?"
God said, "I tried to. Remember the log, the raft, the rowboat, the power boat and the Helicopter?"
This is why:
