and are fully dependent on the wind to move them around. Their sail is
oriented on an angle across their oval-shaped bodies, which determines
how they move in relation to the wind direction.
They eventually sail up to coastlines and are washed up on the beaches.
Mass-stranding events usually take place in the spring, which is a
spectacular event to witness! They eventually lose their blue
pigmentation as they dry out, leaving beautiful transparent skeletons
behind.
The blue-coloured base is also referred to as the float considering it
contains air sacs. Stinging tentacles (called nematocysts) hang down
into the water to capture plankton and other small animals for food.
