Tennessee Williams once wrote: “You can be young without money, but you can’t be old without it.”
Young adults in this country are taking this advice seriously, perhaps too much so, with 90% of those between 18 and 24 feeling overwhelmingly stressed about their future — and finances and work life are at the top of their list of stressors.
The Sun Life Canadian Health Index survey compiled by Ipsos Reid seeks to measure our attitudes towards healthy lifestyles. Sun Life released its third annual index his week, showing the impact the global financial crisis appears to be having on the mental health of this country’s young people.
“This finding is consistent with what we are seeing in our disability claims business — Canadians age 30 and under, 40% of their long term disability claims relate to mental health,” says Kevin Dougherty, president of Sun Life Financial Canada.

Young Canadians feeling the financial pain

It makes sense that young Canadians are now feeling financial pain because Canada is right next to the U.S. However, as things change in the U.S. and Canada and around the world it makes opportunists of everyone. If people cannot find opportunities in their own country these days often they have to go to another country worldwide. Though in some ways this is not the safest of choices for others it is the only choice they have.

There were times in the early 1980s and once again around 1990 that I found myself and my family in difficult financial times for different reasons each time.  However, if one learns to become an opportunist in all ways there is a way forward not only for individuals but also for families. It isn't ever easy but remember it is always possible just maybe not in the way you originally dreamed or hoped. Where there's a will there's a way.
