Solar Flare: Fiction

I was thinking about writing something about a potential Solar Flare as big as the Carrington Event in 1859. The reason I want to do this is that the likelihood of a similar event to a Carrington event is more likely in the next two years than at any time since 1859.

George had just landed in San Francisco after being in Hawaii with his family. They had landed and the cabin door had opened and as he was disembarking all the lights went out in the terminal and in the plane. Luckily, his wife had a flashlight built into her Galaxy smartphone and he had downloaded the app to make it actually work. After he turned the flashlight on, he opened some of the window shades on the plane thinking there would be some light outside the plane. But, it was night time without a moon and there were no lights at all. So, George thought this was pretty weird until he heard a crashing sound and looked out the side of the plane  through a small passenger window and all he saw was sparks of a plane also without lights skidding down the runway until it hit another plane and both blew up.

He looked at his wife who said, "What was that?" Wishing to shield her for a little while from the truth he said, "I don't know. Maybe someone opened the luggage door to our plane. Let's get off the plane because there is no light and I don't know how long the flashlight built into your phone will last.

As they walked out into the terminal it seemed like everyone was using their cellphones for light. Someone said, "We need everyone to evacuate the terminal please because our emergency lighting isn't working and we don't want anyone to be injured in the dark please. So, most people held their phones as light sources and a few fished out headlamps or small flashlights from back packs or small luggage or purses they had carried on the planes they just landed on or were preparing to take off with. So, people slowly lumbered out of the terminal. They all noticed how scared the Air Line and Airport employees were.

More Crashing sounds and grinding sounds started. A woman security person was crying in the corner. Another employee was comforting her. George said,  "What's wrong?" The man who was trying to calm down another employee of the airport looked seriously at George and motioned for him to come closer. He spoke quietly to George. "There's been a major Solar Flare. Powers out throughout at least the northern Hemisphere. Planes are crashing because their electrical has shut down. Satellites like GPS aren't working. It's really bad."

George asked, "Will my car run?" The man said, "If you go outside and watch for buses that likely will tell you." George gathered his wife and said, "We need to move more quickly outside this terminal. His wife said, "But our car is another direction in long term parking?" George said, "I need to see if the buses are running to long term parking." His wife said, "Okay".

More crashing sounds were occurring. They watched a whole terminal next to them explode with jet fuel. His wife screamed and said, "What's happening, George? Is this 9-11 again?"

George said, "It's worse. There has been a huge solar flare and everything electrical isn't working as far as I know." She said, "Is that what that Airport employee told you?" George said, "Yes" and a sick feeling that told him nothing was running not even cars and buses kept rising in his stomach.

Finally, everyone had helped each other out to where the buses usually picked people up and took them to hotels and long term parking and such. But, nothing was running and people were confused especially the bus and limo drivers who couldn't start their vehicles.

George said, "Dear. We may have no choice but to spend the night in the terminal." His wife said, "I don't want to do that. Is it necessary?" George said, "Well. Nothing is running so likely our car won't run either." She said, "Don't we want to try to see if it runs?" George said, "Do you see even one car or bus running here?" She said, "I hear nothing at all anywhere not even from the Freeway. I think I'm scared George." George looked at her and said, "Me too,  Dear. But, remember we still have each other?" She smiled a brave smile.

Note: The previous was fictional. However, when I flew back to the U.S. from Hawaii on the 8th of October 2012 and landed in San Francisco with my family I didn't know then that a solar flare was hitting earth as we were flying back. It seriously affected my health and finally realized just over a week ago that it had damaged my heart and found I had to find a heart specialist and get my doctor to prescribe heart medicine to keep me going. I also didn't know at the time of my flight that the reason Alaska Airlines computers had gone down for 5 hours was also the Solar Flare hitting the magnetosphere of earth. Later that week  as I was driving to southern California I was told the whole ATM system was down for that gas station I stopped at to buy gas. I said, "Is this the solar flares?" The attendent said, "Yes." Luckily I had enough cash to purchase gas. As I researched through the Internet I was able to find many satellites either shut down to avoid damage or that damage had occurred in them. So, is what I wrote feasible to actually happen from a big enough Solar Flare during the next two years. I don't know you tell me.

2nd note: Also, what I describe above is more the type of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) that fries electrical wires, generators and motors in everything not specifically designed by the military to survive a nearby nuclear blast which also produces an EMP which tends to fry everything electrical nearby(the area which depends upon the size of a nuclear blast). For example, a 100 megaton hydrogen bomb set off in the middle of the U.S. at 100 miles up would destroy everything electrical in the U.S. so it would never work again without serious repairing done. One of the other facts about a nuclear blast emp like this is that everything living within 12 feet of anything metal likely would die instantly from electrocution. But, I don't think a Solar EMP would be strong enough to cause death from being near anything metal. So, if this happened we would have to rely on electrical infrastructure in nations not hit with an EMP in order to recover more quickly. Government research has said that a "Carrington Event" would create 1 to 2 trillion dollars in damage that would take 4 to 10 years to recover from worldwide (or wherever it hit here on earth).

Here are some websites to read how the Carrington event of 1859 set papers on fire in telegraph offices around the world. And even when they shut down the electricity to their telegraph lines they could still send an electric signal through the line to send telegraph messages. It never got dark (because of the Aurora Borealis) extending around most of earth at that time throughout the night.

    end quote from Google.

The whole point of this exercise is so people harden their electrical devices so planes don't crash (especially passenger jet planes), so Satellites don't turn upside down like GPS satellites often do when hit by solar flares or just burn out completely and become unusable ever again. And also cars and trucks and buses here on earth might not run either unless they are designed according to U.S. government military Specifications for surviving the EMP from a nuclear blast at a distance.

By the way a large solar flare has the same characteristics as an EMP exactly in how it fries things electrical depending upon proximity.

So, as a human being you don't want to presently be flying in a passenger jet plane if a really big solar flare is hitting the magnetosphere of earth right then like what happened to me already. The only thing worse to be doing would be to be an astronaut on the Space station while a really large solar flare is hitting earth. (By the way they have a SAFE room to protect them if they get advanced notice at the space station)
