A United Airlines flight bound from Denver for Tokyo diverted to Seattle and made an emergency landing tonight because of a problem with an oil filter aboard the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Aviation news website AirlineReporter.com said that the Tokyo-bound jet landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and was met by a fire crew that determined the aircraft was safe. Repairs were underway.
The landing was at 5:13 p.m. MDT.
"United flight 139 from Denver to Tokyo-Narita [International Airport] diverted to Seattle due to an indication of a problem with an oil filter," the website quoted a United Airlines spokesperson as saying. "The aircraft landed normally and without incident and we are working to reaccommodate customers."
Normally the flight would travel northwest out of Colorado and up the west coast of Canada on an arcing route to Japan.
FlightAware, an aircraft tracking service, showed the aircraft as having flown on course as far as the northern tip of Vancouver Island off the Canadian coast, then doubling back to land at Seattle.
United launched nonstop service between Denver International Airport and Tokyo just eight days ago with much fanfare.
The Dreamliner recently returned to service after a three-month grounding over problems with the new jet’s lithium-ion battery systems.
