Uhaul Trailers

When I grew up there weren't closed truck vans to rent yet in Los Angeles, only bobtail open flatbeds. So, if you wanted to move yourself you had to get a tarp or plastic to protect your furniture from the weather. In June of 1969 I helped my MOm and Dad move to San Diego from Glendale for Dad's new job. This sort of left me in the lurch at 21 so I first went to live with my Aunt for a short time before I got an apartment in Venice at the beach. But that is another story.

Yesterday my daughter's boyfriend had flown down from Portland to help drive the Uhaul trailer full of furniture that we had extra that they wanted after selling one of our properties last spring. So, we carefully loaded up and tied everything down carefully to avoid it shifting as we traveled. However, we found that 60 is about as fast as it was safe to travel without fishtailing so our travel north was kind of slow. So, I think it will add about 4 hours to our journey north. Be sure if you are going to do this that you understand the problems of trailers like 60% of your weight has to be in front of the trailer wheels if you don't want major fishtailing problems. Also, you don't want to overload your trailer either.

Though I could have hired someone to do all this it is much less expensive to do it yourself if you have the time to do it. Besides, it is nice to be able to take another road trip. Today the weather is beautiful where we are. However, everything north of us is cloudy and rainy but not a cloud in the sky here so far. We brought plastic to cover the furniture inside the enclosed trailer because they are not guaranteed waterproof, only water resistant. So,  putting a big tarp or plastic over your furniture to protect it when traveling through rain might be useful and even then the bases of your furniture might get damp. So, knowing this ahead of time might be useful.
