begin quote Chapter 1 'Race Against the Machine"
And it's not just workers. Technological progress---in particular, improvements in computer hardware, software, and networks--has been so rapid and so surprising that many present-day organizations, institutions, policies, and mindsets are not keeping up. Viewed through this lens, the increase in globalization is not an alternative explanation, but rather one of the consequences of the increased power and ubiquity of technology.
end quote from Chapter 1.
In other words change is just so fast that so few people are aware of it that no institution of government or society is properly dealing with it in any useful way.
As more and more people become homeless, don't have food to eat, don't have clothes on their backs worldwide and aren't cared for revolutions like the ones we have seen in Arab Spring likely will spontaneously erupt in the 50% of nations in which there are NO social welfare programs in place. And as this become more serious even in the upper 50% of nations that might have more social welfare programs in place the lack of opportunity for advancement or to make any money at all will grind nations to a halt in one way or another as people rebel in an almost infinite amount of ways.
Can any government or nation stand up to these changes in any useful Way? BEcause the very foundations of governments are based upon people working for a living whether they be farmers or laborers or technicians or whatever. With the very foundations of modern day society being so desperately undermined can society or governments survive this in any serious way? So, the foundations of what civility and society and governments themselves are being undermined at every level because of these changes.
If enough people aren't aware of this now civilization (at least as we have come to know it) could end.
Later: Note: I was thinking how much of our countries taxes come from income taxes and since big businesses have the monies to hire lawyers to pay almost no taxes at all or move their money outside of the country or whatever, that much of the tax base of our country is dwindling at this point. If people aren't hired by new jobs this decreases the governments tax base even further and degrades what the government is capable of doing defending our country. This even has affected the value of homes which has caused the bankruptcies of cities and areas and firings of public school teachers, firemen and policemen and caused many things to go awry and out of control across our country.
So, in a variety of ways we are watching public services degrade at an alarming rate. So, unless people are aware of what is really causing it there will be no useful solution to these problems ongoing.
So, as you can see this is far more than people not having jobs, this is also the undoing of our nation as a viable entity and as all nations as viable entities on the world stage. It also helps end human rights worldwide because only in an educated affluent society with a large middle class can human rights actually exist and be enforced. So, we are presently living in a less and less civil society worldwide because of this too.
