The North East tends to be anti-Gun despite 9-11 and the Boston Bombing at the marathon and other terrorist events. However, the South, the Midwest and the West of the U.S. tends to be pro-gun simply because most people have at least one gun in their home and they want to keep those guns to protect themselves and their families. This is a 400 year tradition and has existed ongoing like this since the Pilgrims first successfully colonized North America at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620.
However, there are also many homes that forbid weapons in their homes but even then those types of homes keep baseball bats to ward off intruders for an emergency or keep non-sharpened swords and knives for intruders also.
Another interesting thing about the U.S. If you go to Canada even today and walk as a stranger into someone's home the reaction might be: "What are you doing here?"
However, if you walk as a stranger into someone's house in the U.S. you might just be shot for this on the spot.
This is the difference between Canada and the U.S. I cannot entirely tell you why this is this way. However, if you visit the U.S. don't go walking unannounced into a home or you might be dead. If you need help go up to a door and knock on it. If there is no answer just walk away politely so you stay alive and go find another door to knock on for help. Then wait for someone to come to the door to tell your problem too.
