Lots of Snow on Mt. Shasta and more almost every day coming down now
Some rain or mist almost every single day now here in the greater SF Bay Area. If it doesn't come by day it comes by night as storm after storm keeps coming through California, especially to the north. My friend called me from Bunny Flats on Mt. Shasta telling me the snow for mountaineering skiing is particularly excellent right now. 5 to 7 feet at Bunny Flats right now he said. Earlier today I looked at Mt. Shasta Ski Park Conditions
which is similar at 78" or 6 feet 7 inches of snow top depth and around 60 inches or 5 feet base depth. So, now appears to be a good time to ski wherever you go on Mt. Shasta for now. However, the weather also says 2 inches of rain (which could translate into 2 feet of snow under some conditions at altitude) makes me not want to drive north through 2 inches of rain coming down on Sunday.
Remember in the graph below that these temperatures are at around 3500 to 3700 feet whereas most people are skiing at altitudes between 5000 feet and 10,000 feet except for people climbing mountain to the top with skis at 14,161 feet and skiing down. So, most rain becomes snow above 4000 to 5000 feet instead of rain.
You can see what I mean by looking at the weather chart for January regarding what has happened and what might happen the rest of the month:
