A crane is believed to have fallen onto a car.
A crane collapsed onto the Tappan Zee Bridge at about noon today, shutting down travel in both directions on the span.
Rockland
County Executive Ed Day said five people had injuries that were not
life-threatening — three drivers and two bridge workers. The office for Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is on his way to the bridge via helicopter, said that the crane operator was trapped in the crane after the collapse.
He was expected to hold a media briefing at about 3:15 p.m.
South Nyack-Grand View police Chief Brent Newbury said drivers should expect "a traffic nightmare.""When you've got so many pieces of equipment, something is bound to happen," he said. "I'm not surprised."

EFFECT: Tappan Zee crane collapse vexes drivers
In Rockland, cars are being diverted from Interstate 87 onto the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Trucks are being routed off the Thruway at Exit 12.
In Westchester, drivers on Interstate 287 are being diverted onto Interstate 87.
Cars stuck on the bridge were being turned around and sent back in their direction of travel.
At 2 p.m. crews were in the process of slicing up the metal crane boom to clear the road deck. It was unclear if that would be enough to get traffic moving again.
Drivers stuck in traffic on the bridge were walking outside their cars to get a glimpse of the crane, while bystanders in Rockland County were gathering on side roads to watch the incident unfold.
Brian Solomon, one of the drivers stuck on the bridge, said hundreds of people got out of their cars to see the crane.
"We were flying through the bridge and out of nowhere it came to a dead stop. The sides of the bridges, they're completely destroyed on both sides," he said. "Everybody's talking to each other, asking what's going on. We saw one person on a stretcher. As long as nobody got [seriously] hurt, I have no problem waiting."
Diana Cortez, Tarrytown-area director for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said her agency had sent two inspectors to the scene.
“It’s not going to wrap up today, that’s for sure. I have no idea (when it might),” she said.
Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner said that there obviously has to be a review as to the oversight on the massive project. … “everybody who goes over the bridge expects that they are going to be able to travel safely. … it’s unacceptable for any accident to occur on a construction project like this.”
Alternate routes for drivers who need to get across the Hudson River are the Bear Mountain Bridge to the north and the George Washington Bridge to the south.
