Here are the basic reasons air travel will be a nightmare this summer worldwide:

Because of Covid thousands to millions of pilots and stewards and stewardesses and baggage handlers were either laid off or given early retirement worldwide.

The problem: There are not enough of them now to go around today worldwide to man the planes.

So, as airlines schedule flights often they are being optimistic in having qualified personnel to man these planes worldwide. So, when the day of the flight comes often they cannot actually put together a flight crew for these planes worldwide.

So, until flight crew numbers increase and until there are enough flight crews again to go around who are actually qualified to fly this summer likely will be a nightmare.

Also, flying just increases the number of covid cases among both crew and passengers every time someone infectious flies worldwide too. This will tend to create a significant increase in covid Cases especially in Omicron Variants worldwide too from vacationers trying to travel worldwide now.

Another factor here is that:

Flying is seen as less expensive (even though it is more risky regarding getting covid or spreading covid). So, not having to pay $80 to $160 to fill up my large sized 4wheel drive Tundra truck now in California makes airline fares seem like a bargain.

However, on a purely safety level you are much safer and possibly less inconvenienced (with flight cancellations after you get to the airports worldwide) if you drive your car to a land destination that you can actually drive to these days.

I don't think gas rationing will hit here until July or August at the earliest. However, in Europe it could begin country by country almost any day now. So, traveling to Europe is a potential problem if you are renting a car if you cannot get gas or diesel to drive it.
