Flood Recovery and Operations
Learn and ExploreBeginning June 12, 2022, unprecedented amounts of rainfall caused substantial flooding, rockslides, and mudslides within Yellowstone National Park. Historic water levels caused severe damage to roads, water and wastewater systems, power lines, and other critical park infrastructure. Check this page often for information and updates on flood recovery efforts and park operations. Alternating License Plate System (ALPS)To ensure the south loop does not become overwhelmed with visitors and to balance park resource protection and economic interests of surrounding communities, the park is instituting an interim visitor access plan, referred to as the Alternating License Plate System (ALPS). The National Park Service (NPS) will actively monitor the license plate system for impacts to resources, visitor experience, staffing, operations, infrastructure, and gateway communities and may adjust the ALPS or implement a reservation or timed entry system at any time. The NPS and Recreation.gov are concurrently building a new reservation system that will be ready for implementation if needed. Explore the map above by clicking on roads or photo points. Photo points are representative of damage in this area, and not all damaged areas are captured on this map. Flood Recovery & Operations FAQs“We have made tremendous progress in a very short amount of time but have a long way to go. We have an aggressive plan for recovery in the north and resumption of operations in the south. We appreciate the tremendous support from National Park Service and Department of the Interior leadership, in addition to our surrounding Congressional delegations, governors, counties, communities, and other partners." - Cam Sholly, Yellowstone National Park Superintendent News Releases
