It might be because they like the idea of someone dangerous, of someone who breaks all the rules and still survives somehow.
In the case of Trump he is such a good con man that he gets a lot done by destroying everything good about the United States and the world.
The ONLY thing really important to Trump is (not his followers Or the U.S) but only him.
The problem is (according to his neice who is a psychologist) Trump has Narcissistic Personality disorder which is a kind of mental illness caused usually by trauma in one's childhood or young adulthood. In other words no matter what kind of Personality disorder you might have it comes from trauma earlier in life and is not curable by counseling. It is a permanent mental injury which affects how you do everything in your life. This is the problem with Trump for America which is that when he was president as a mentally ill person who simply could not recognize the truth or reality or patriotism because of this mental illness created likely by the trauma of how he was treated by his father growing up.
