Because of the 2 years of Covid and because my wife are over 45 (because 21% of the covid deaths were over 45 to 65 and around 71% of the deaths were 65 and older worldwide. We thought it prudent not to travel until Covid realities became much more manageable like they are now.
However, what is amazing to me while there are still 400 people a day dying of Covid in the U.S. or 146,000 people a year still dying (even though the summers now) it's not logical for me to see so many people indoors in airports, restaurants and flying without masks. But, that's just me as a 74 year old educated male from California.
So, needless to say my wife and I and the couple we were traveling with made a point of wearing masks indoors in airports and on planes getting to our destination (this time) on Kauai.
It's harder traveling at this age in many different ways but we are lucky that financing this isn't the problem it was in my 20s when I was young and still figuring it all out so to speak.
My first trip to Hilo where we had friends living then in 1974 was just after I got married and had a son. My wife had lived in Hilo, Hawaii on the big island before we met so Hilo in August was way hotter than I expected and the first few days without air conditioning I literally thought (because I have always had a little trouble with the heat) likely because i have this super hot very fine and thick Scottish hair from my mother that really isn't good for the heat (unless your head is shaved) but at that time like most of my compatriots in college my hair was more on the long side so I was too hot without air conditioning which wasn't in all homes then in Hilo and we weren't wealthy then so we basically cooked during the days there and took a lot of showers or got into the ocean whenever we could. But, I was also often working at a job in Hilo Too. But then, another problem occurred which was that a friend was rolling foot long avocadoes off the roof of the house we were renting but the grass around the house (because we didn't have a lawnmower and because Hilo is basically in a rain forest) I stepped on a hidden piece of glass likely from glass bottle of some kind and needed 10 stitches into my bare foot. This was a problem because I couldn't walk without my blood all running out. So, this meant I couldn't work and had to keep my leg up on a table or something to prevent my blood all running out of me through my toe. Eventually, this plus my wife then was worried about mice or rats getting to our baby in this house so eventually I gave in and went back to the mainland with my wife and baby and became a partner in a family mining business. I was too young (financially) to become an investing partner but I became a working partner instead.
So, we went from Hilo Hawaii to Yucca Valley where my father and I were building my parents retirement home. A Friend who was an architect by trade who had graduated Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and I were working partners together then and my wife and baby and friend lived at my parents house we were building near Yucca Valley. My friend and I refurbished a mining mill in 29 palms then which was part of my extended family's mining business then in California and Arizona.
However, this was 1974 and 1975 and after and now today is Fall of 2022 years later and now I'm 74.
So, today we are with another couple for a snorkeling trip to Kauai and Maui for a few weeks time. It's so good to come back here after having to stay away to stay alive for the last 3 years time.
People we knew who kept flying during Covid sometimes lost themselves or their partner we noticed during Covid from Covid. So, we are glad we were so self disciplined that we made the right choice and survived it all.
Anyway, it's wonderful to be here. We spent time at Costco after we flew in yesterday picking up staples for the condo we are renting while we are here.
We woke up at about 5 or 6 am (which would be 8 or 9 am) in California PT and watched the sun come up this morning and it was 70 degrees outside from the 4th floor of our condo on our balcony. It was beautiful because we could see the sun rise and the fluffy clouds you get here in Hawaii turning pink slowly from the sun. We could hear the wild Roosters of Kauai crowing and the mina birds crowing as they welcomed the Sun here on Kauai this morning. Good Stuff!
