I have spent all my life (especially since age 15 or so) trying to become completely enlightened.
However, what it actually is is not what I thought it was at age 15.
As I met gurus and teachers from around the world they told me different things about enlightenment or ascension (depending upon who you are studying with at the time).
But, what I found enlightenment really is is completely based upon compassion.
What really happens as you grow as a being and become more trusted by all life around you, then life doesn't have to kill you for misusing what God has given you.
So, the more you study about enlightenment the more you begin to see it is more like Tibetan Lamas told me.
"It is like being on a stage and drawing open a curtain and suddenly you are the diety of enlightenment yourself".
So, the primary thing about enlightenment seems to be self acceptance of your being enlightened coupled with Infinite compassion for yourselves and all beings in the universe.
So, practicing compassion for yourselves and all beings everywhere it really important in actually attaining enlightenment in this life time.
However, that doesn't mean you have to be anyone's victim either.
There is what is called Right mindful Compassion which is using your intelligence and common sense to help the most people you can including yourselves.
To the Buddhists this means you attain enlightenment like the Buddha or a King in order to bestow enlightenment upon all beings in the universe.
These thoughts are infinitely powerful if you completely understand what I'm saying here. If you realize the truth of what I am saying here you are already there.
You are already enlightened right now.
Is that the end?
There is no end. There are as many different forms of enlightenment as there are beings in the universe.
So, lets say you become a an enlightened carpenter (like Jesus) and then you become an enlightened Lawyer (like maybe Gandhi) and then you become and enlightened fisherman (LIke Saint Peter) or say you become an enlightened soldier with PTSD (like St. Francis of Asisi).
There are many forms of enlightenment so once you master one type you have every other type to choose from too if you are interested.
