What Yang and Filo built into Yahoo was completely revolutionary at the time

What Yang and Filo built was revolutionary for the time: a hierarchical index of the Web divided into subjects such as "computers," "government," and "society and culture." (The service lives on today as the Yahoo Directory.)

end quote.

Though my favorite operating systems had to be MS:DOS and then Windows 95 what allowed people en Masse to get on the Internet without being the ultimate Techie was Yahoo and AOL and dial up Internet (which ran at a very very slow speed compared to now). For example, in the 1990s I remember waiting all night with my printer to load ONE Fractal from UCSC that was amazing. To some degree Fractals and CGI allowed incredible changes in special effects and George Lucas began to pioneer these special effects as far back as the 1977 Star Wars original movie. This then led to Star Trek's original movie with Nimoy and Shattner in 1979.

But, I can remember someone telling me how I could go online for the first time with my 1987 IBM Clone AT computer which was the bees knees to me at the time. So, this is even before the first Pentium computers started to come out like the 386, 486 and 586 Pentiums.

Though it was incredibly slow at first my first emails were sent through Yahoo Mail I believe. So, everyone had to have a free yahoo email address around these times too.

The point I'm making here is dial-up internet was really slow compared to now in all ways. One got used to the special beeping sounds of one's phone line connecting to the Internet and getting service so you could actually do something online that you wanted to.

These are 386 computers you can still buy today:
