This is true for most people. For example, most people who die asleep in their houses first die of smoke inhalation. By the time the fire consumes them they have been dead for some time already. Most people don't know this.
So, if you hear the sirens in Southern California coming to put out the fires be sure to look outside so you know where the fires are now and if you are down wind of those fires then usually you need to leave if you want to stay alive.
It's true many people stay and water their homes but if you are sensitive to smoke I wouldn't do this. Think about this for a moment. Is your house really more important than your life?
Things sometimes can be replaced but your life cannot be replaced once you are gone.
So, listen for those fire engines sirens going off and look outside while you are still alive. Then remember if you want to stay alive your life is likely more important than your home.
However, everyone is going to do whatever they do in the end.
