Today we went to Hendry's Beach with our family and ate at the restaurant there. It can be difficult to find parking on weekends or holidays, however. But, the restaurant and beach are nice year around depending upon the weather. For example, it felt around 70 degrees today there at the restaurant and on the beach but because of the bright full sunlight with no clouds at all it could just has easily been 65 degrees today so it was hard to tell. Many people were walking barefoot on the beach including my daughter who just returned from living in Europe for 1 1/2 years.
It's a nice sort of remote spot as beaches go and a ways away from other restaurants, Hotels and nearer to really nice affluent communities nearby. It's a more remote beach experience than the heavily touristed one you get near the pier in Santa Barbara. Many people come to surf here on good surf days or lay in the sun and catch some rays or go barefoot on the beaches like is common year around from Santa Barbara South all the way to San Diego and the border.

Officially named "Arroyo Burro Beach Park," this beach is just a ten minute drive along the Coast from downtown Santa Barbara. Hendry's is secluded by towering cliffs and a curving coastline. Surfers and children vie for territory as the waves tumble into shore. Hendry's is centrally located to a great deal of other fun. Elings Park is a half mile up Las Positas so you will often see paragliders launching from nearby cliffs. A centerpiece of the beach is the Boathouse Restaurant and a snackbar.

- Dog Policy: Dogs allowed off leash on the beach east (left as you face the ocean) of Arroyo Burro Creek, and on-leash in the rest of the beach and park
Dogs are only allowed off leash on the beach in Santa Barbara in one specific, continuous stretch of beach: west (right as you face the ocean) of the beach staircase at Shoreline Park, all of Thousand Steps Beach, all of Mesa Lane Beach, and east (left as you face the ocean) of the mouth of Arroyo Burro Creek at Hendry's Beach.
Right next door to the beach, atop the towering bluff to the east, is the Douglas Family Reserve which features some of the most pristine cliffside terrain in all of Santa Barbara. Though there is a lot of parking at Hendry's, when it's gone - the parking's gone. There are no beach volleyball courts or random entertainment offerings. This is a beach for sand and surf enthusiasts with a killer restaurant/bar popped right down in the middle of it.
Directions: Take the 101 Freeway to Las Positas Road. Turn away from the mountains. When you come to a roundabout veer to the right. The entrance to Hendry's Beach will be a short distance away on your left.
