When I look at the fires in Los Angeles County I think about the "New Normal?" we are entering into worldwide. The ways we looked at things before are not going to work anymore when these extreme events become more and more possible and then actually happen sometimes.
This likely won't be the last time that fires burn this many houses in California at one time because of weather changes that would have been unthinkable before.
So, when you combine dryness (the southern California Drought) and then get 100 mph winds then power lines are logically going to blow down a lot and start fires like these ones.
So, we are entering a new normal and it also makes sense unfortunately that insurance companies might not insure most houses at any price after this debacle.
So, what happens next?
I think the building codes are going to have to change a lot before people even start to rebuild now for one thing. I think building underground parts of houses might be important with firewalls in place so the underground parts won't burn down. In other words this way people might have a place to live if they built like this even if their homes burned down in the future. (if the above ground fires consumed their above ground house). So, their below ground house would still be intact because of strong firewalls preventing it burning down too.
I don't think these fires will stop into the future in fact I think the winds are going to create even worse fires that are more devastating in the future. So, likely this isn't going to stop but instead things likely will get worse and worse over time. So, the past is gone and we have to now face a very uncertain future.
I wish I could say that these fires will stop never to come again.
Because of Global Climate changes I don't think anyone can say now that these types of fires won't happen again, again, and again on into the future.
We have entered a new normal.
How are we all going to survive this new normal?
