In my early 20s I was suicidal because I had separated not only from my childhood religion but also from the girl I wanted to marry.
To make all this even more complicated I realized later that I likely was in love with at least 3 of my girlfriends but at the time I had a more Disneyland point of view that there was only one person for me to marry. So, this confused me greatly in my early 20s.
However, over time I stayed alive by living on for my parents (I didn't want to harm them by my death) and I also stayed alive at first for all my girlfriends. If I was dating someone I owed it to them to not take my life while I was dating them.
Eventually my live in girlfriend got pregnant when I was 25 and going to college and we got married and I left college to financially support my son and my new wife. After this I didn't worry about suicide anymore because I had a reason to live beyond myself for my son and my wife. It hasn't been a problem ever since.
However, going through several years like that changes a person and can make them a much deeper person if they survive all this.
And this eventually around age 30 I began to understand NON-dualism as opposed to dualism.
What is dualism? EVerything is either Good or bad completely.
I realized this is a really childish way to look at things. Dualism
Because real adult life isn't like this at all. Nothing is completely good or completely bad. It just isn't true at all unless you are training a child to be obedient at 2 years old so they don't run out into the street and get hit by a car or something.
But, as an adult dualism is completely ridiculous. It's a lie and a fabrication based upon manipulating people for one purpose or another started by ancient Kings and Queens messing with the heads of their people.
So, as I began to understand Non-Dualism I began to think about the weather.
Is rain good or bad?
Is sun good or bad?
Is Snow good or Bad?
Is Wind Good or Bad?
Are Animals Good or Bad?
Are People Good or Bad?
You are right! It all depends upon the situation each of these things can be good or bad or anything in between.
For example, rain might be good and you need the water to drink and to live. But, if you get too much of it and it floods and kills your whole family then you would see the rain as bad.
But, at the same time this rain might be saving other people's lives and instead of dying of thirst they have water to drink and water to water their crops worldwide so they can grow food and live.
And Compassion is like this as well.
Learning compassion for yourself you stay alive and don't commit suicide
Learning compassion for others you don't kill others because they piss you off.
Learning compassion for yourself and for all others you become a Buddha or become enlightened or become a Good Christian or whatever religion you are.
Compassion and Non-dualism is the key to enlightenment too.
