Writing is a way to share ideas. For example, as a child I looked around me at all the people dying at every age (from children to old age) and I thought to myself, "Why are all these people around me dying all the time at every age?"
I don't think I was alone in thinking like this because many people of my generation (baby boomers) dedicated their lives to extending human lives as much as possible. Why?
Because they saw the chaos it brings into everyone's life when relatives and friends die before they should.
So, we have watched slowly the life expectancy of people move from age 60 in 1900 to 70 in 1950.
I asked what the present life expectancy is and it has dropped a little from Covid even after Covid was the problem it was from 2020 to 2022.
begin quote from Google AI regarding U.S. life expectancy:
In
2022, the life expectancy at birth in the U.S. was 77.5 years, with a
slight increase of 1.1 years compared to 2021 according to the CDC.Specifically, life expectancy for men was 74.8 years, and for women, it was 80.2 years. While there has been a slight increase, life expectancy in the U.S. is still lower than pre-pandemic levels.
end partial quote from Google AI:
So, Covid has dropped our life expectancy somewhat since 2020 and continues to do so. I think this is because Covid often causes other diseases like Auto-immune diseases in people and brain fog and other complications that might have been present before but were relatively inactive. So, Covid continues to depress our longevity even today here in 2025.
So, anyway in the 1950s I watched people die all the time around me and not just old people. Kids were dying of Polio and Measles then and other childhood diseases much more than now. People didn't wear seat belts so it wasn't unusual for kids to go racing in cars and people would fly hundreds of feet when they crashed and die both on motorcycles and in cars.
So, death was all around us then more in the 1950s much more than now.
To me, the biggest change has been people choosing to get educated more so they learned about how to survive better not just physically but also psychologically as well.
My father was a vegetarian since 1934 because he was also Valedictorian of his High School Class as well. He became a vegetarian and studied with Paul Bragg for example who was also a teacher of Jack Lalanne who started the exercise craze in the 1950s and had an exercise and diet program on TV in Los Angeles and who started building gyms for people to stay fit and started the Jogging craze in the 1950s in Los Angeles and around the country.
So, I grew up with a Dad trying to make me Comfrey smoothies with Avocadoes and Mangoes and strawberries and stuff like that.
When Mom was pregnant with me he had her take about 90 vitamins a day during her pregnancy with me. To some degree this worked because I grew to be 6 foot 5 inches tall and very muscular with a lot of endurance especially for long hikes in the wilderness and for rock climbing or surfing or Scuba diving and such.
As you can see writing is a way to share good ideas so all of us live longer than our parents and grandparents and Great Grandparents did and we get better educated than them too along the way.
