I was taught gun safety from about age 5 or 6 years old even though I wasn't given my own gun and bullets until I was 8 years old
This helped me a lot. OF course I was 8 in 1956 and it was normal for boys then to have their own guns (a .22 rifle) usually) where I lived in Los Angeles. Every friend I had had a .22 Rifle by age 10 in Glendale where I grew up from age 8 to 21.
So, I kept my .22 rifle and bullets in the closet away from other children. I put the bullets on as high a shelf as I could so little children couldn't reach them and kept my gun cleaned and oiled and ready for whatever emergency arose where I might have to use it to defend my family or to kill a varmint of some kind that was harming or could harm my family. This was normal for around 400 to 500 years in the U.S. and goes back all the way to Europe in some ways too before people migrated here a lot from Europe starting in the 1600s to Plymouth Rock, in Massachusetts.
