Alec Guinness once described Star Wars (1977) as “fairytale rubbish.” In his autobiography, Guinness recalled meeting a fan who had seen the film more than 100 times & only agreed to sign an autograph after making the fan promise never to watch it again.

Ambiguously (or is it ambivalently?) gay English actor Sir Alec Guinness was BOTD in 1914 and died in 2000 at the age of 86. In the BFI listing of the 100 most important British films of the 20th century, he was the single most noted actor, represented across nine films - six in starring roles and three in supporting roles - including five directed by David Lean and four from Ealing Studios. He won a best actor oscar for playing Colonel Nicholson in Lean’s “Bridge of the River Kwai” (1957). Based on biographies and revelations following his death, Alec Guinness was bisexual. He kept his sexuality private, largely due to societal homophobia and a 1946 arrest for a homosexual act, while remaining married for 62 years to his wife, Merula, from 1938 until his death, with whom he had a son. Apparently Guinness frequented London Turkish baths for sexual liaisons and he was fined ten guineas for a homosexual act in a public lavatory in Liverpool in 1946. He avoided a scandal by giving the pol

$150,000 salary. Around $100 million from the upside. For less than 20 minutes on screen. That is the Alec Guinness lesson. He almost turned Star Wars down. To him it was a strange little space film from a young director. Robots. Laser swords. Odd dialogue.

Sir Ian McKellen recently revealed that the late Sir Alec Guinness, famed for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi, once "pleaded" with him to stop his public advocacy for gay rights, calling such political involvement "unseemly" for an actor. McKellen described this as the "worst advice" he ever received. He ignored it, continuing his activism and publicly coming out as gay in 1988 during a BBC radio debate against legislation limiting gay rights in the UK.
