I think enlightenment is more about peace and a sense of well being than direct happiness. However, if one has a sense of well being and peace I guess you could also say that person is happy too.
When I was young in my 20s I almost didn't survive them because I wanted ecstatic happiness all the time. The problem with this is as high as you go into ecstasy it causes and equal low point that is sort of like wishing you were dead. Once I realized this in my late 20s I came to see that a "middle ground" is sustainable but the extremes people go for in their teens and twenties often is fatal or causes various kinds of insanity in a person. So, like Buddha I realized that "The Middle Path" which also could be called "The Path of Moderation" that the ancient Greeks also pursued and what Buddha came to call "Lam Rim" or the "Middle Way" after almost killing himself by starving himself to death doing extreme practices near Bodhgaya, India, was the best path to pursue long term. Even my father who was a very brilliant man went to extremes even though he was valedictorian of his High School Class. And one of his extremes was preventative medicine to the exclusion of all medical doctors. This system worked Great for him until he had to face prostate cancer starting at age 65. Since I am now that same age I have regular checkups to prevent the problems my father had. But, I am more willing to engage medical doctors and specialists to create better outcomes than my father had. He waited to long because he thought preventative medicine was going to save his life. In the end not getting with Medical Doctors in a timely fashion killed my father at age 69.
So, is enlightenment happiness. The best answer likely would be "Yes". However, it also goes along with being balanced and practical regarding all things. So, someone truly enlightened also likely would be a person who could live past 100 or eventually even 200 when that time comes because of their happy, balanced approach to life regarding all things.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
