So, if I'm understanding correctly what is being said in all these articles the past week and today there are now, (de facto) three Iraqs at present. There is Kurdistan (to the north), ISIS to the west and Anbar and into Northern Syria, and there is still what is called Iraq but what is now de facto only composed of Baghdad and to the East and South.
Likely what might happen is this new Iraq (baghdad to the east and south, might just become a part of Iran whereas the other two pieces might become their own new countries.
However, Turkey doesn't want a Kurdistan on it's borders and might try to take that territory eventually from Kurdish control.
Assad has paid off ISIS (ISIL) with lands and oil wells because they were too much (craziness) for him to deal with and has hired ISIS to kill more moderate Syrian Rebels. With the lands and oil ISIS has managed to gain enough of a foothold to also take Mosul and Tikrit as well as millions of dollars or wealth from banks in this area.
De facto the old Iraq is over. Better start redrawing your maps for the 3 new Iraqs: Kurdistan, ISIS and Baghdad to the east and south.
And these changes are not necessarily over just yet either.
It is not realistic to expect either Iran or the U.S. will take back any land lost already to ISIS because of geopolitical concerns.
However, expect Baghdad and Karbala and Najaf and other Shia sacred sites to be protected vehemently by all Shias in Iraq and Iran and Syria.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
