June Gloom

This is what we call in Northern California the "June Glooms" because it is when a weather condition usually starts from about Morro Bay up to the California Oregon Border or so where along the coast the high fog (sometimes low fog too) comes in and stays for the month of June. So, often there is no sun at all during this month. I always find this very depressing because I was mostly raised in Southern California where at the same time of year it is in the 80s and 90s Fahrenheit mostly.
For example, right now it is 54 Degrees Fahrenheit and the low last night was around 48 to 50 degrees. And where I grew up mostly in Glendale, California from when I was 8 to about 21 from 1956 to 1969 it is 69 degrees already and going up to at least 80 there today. Whereas where I am now on the northern Coast the high is supposed to be 69 but I don't believe that. We will be lucky to get 60 degrees today.

This is why Mark Twain once said, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."
The wet air is very biting and penetrates your skin and bones. So, on the northern Coast of California June is often almost as cold as the coldest month of Winter in Northern California. The fog can be high or low but always obscures the sun.

So, if you come to San Francisco in June don't ever expect to see the sun. You might see it in July or August when it peeks out from behind the fog but not usually in June as June is the most continually foggy month of the year almost every single year.

If you want really good springlike weather on the northern California coast the really best time for that is usually spring or fall. But, even then like most places it depends upon the year.

But, the good part of living on the northern California coast is no one has an air conditioner. Because if the temperature goes to 80 or above on any sunny day you can expect high or low fog the next day. So, we almost never see days warmer than 80 to 85 degrees ever on the northern California coast which is why people like it here. Also, this is ideal weather for redwood forests and pine forests especially from Morro Bay and from Big Sur north to the Oregon Border and beyond along the coast of California and Oregon.
