The real problem in the middle east isn't what you see in the news.
The real problem right now is Putin. He is the wild card in all this.
Putin wants Shias and Sunnis to all kill each other. To actually understand what Putin wants is the extinction of all Sunni Muslims. If you understand this he is laughing right now at what is happening to Obama in Iraq. Putin supports Iran and Syria BECAUSE they are Shia and not Sunni.
Because one of the reasons the Soviet Union collapsed (Putin thinks the Soviet Union's collapse was the greatest tragedy of the 20th century) once of the reasons it collapsed was problems with Sunnis in many Soviet States which the Soviet Union could not control without going bankrupt which it did basically.
So, Putin now as all about revenge against the Sunnis.
So, seeing the U.S. suffer because we put in place a majority Shia government (Maliki) and now ISIS which is Sunni Al Qaeda (actually too murderous for Al Qaeda) is making Putin laugh at the United States and the position our President and country is in, especially because Maliki is an ally of Iran and Syria (which Russia is also allies with).
So, the Middle East only gets to be a bigger mess every day now.
But, wading into the middle of all this with U.S. troops just isn't going to happen. Iran also can't get involved in Iraq with it's military because of the Iran Iraq war in the 80s between Saddam Hussein and Iran (which was partly funded by the U.S. in revenge of Iran kidnapping our U.S. Embassy personnel and holding them for so long around 1980). Thousands died in that hellish war in which chemicals were used on the Iranians by Saddam Hussein.
At present it is very likely that ISIS will triumph over Maliki and some kind of Sunni Led Government (Islamic State or something like that will be in place of the Maliki government within 2 years. (So, unless NATO stops this from happening) and I don't think that is very likely right now expect Iraq to become more of a mess sort of like Syria very soon (if it isn't there already).
So, I expect now Syria, Yemen and Iraq all to be failed states within 2 to 3 years at most.
Also, if you understand that the actual cause of the Arab Spring was overpopulation, not enough jobs for people under 30 in the Middle East, and too much desert and not enough tillable land, then what you are seeing in the Middle East you can expect around the world when there are not enough jobs, tillable land or resources (other than oil) combined with overpopulation. So, as Global Climate change and overpopulation increases this is what other areas almost like the Middle East can expect next in our world history.
Later: I gave this some more thought during the day today. Though Putin is the primary problem (besides overpopulation, not enough jobs for those under 35, and not being able to get married until you are 35 or older because of not having a good enough career there) I think looking at all this in a "Sphere of Influence" way is useful for everyone on earth.
Sphere of Influence is what the Nuclear powers had to do to not nuke themselves out of existence. One of the way they avoided "Global Thermonuclear holocause" and literally all life on earth dying at once was:
Sphere of Influence.
Sphere of influence is sort of like saying "The U.S. has sphere of influence over Viet Nam right now" during the Viet Nam War. Then sort of saying, "Russia has Sphere of influence over Afghanistan" during the Soviet occupation there that helped put the Soviet Union under. Then Sphere of influence in the 1980s because the U.S. made friends with Saddam Hussein and paid him to fight the Iranians to a stalemate. "They didn't want either side to win sort of like how Putin is playing this in Syria now." So, when Iran was winning we supplied more arms to Saddam Hussein and then Saddam was winning we gave less money to Saddam so he couldn't take over Iran completely. Like Putin the U.S did not want either Saddam or Iran to win then either. We just wanted both sides decimated because both Saddam and Iran were impossible for the U.S. and Europe to deal with.
Now, we are seeing Putin do the same thing with the Shias and the Sunnis. He really doesn't want either of them around at all but, the Shias are easier for him to deal with because there are less of them. However, he is still dealing with Chechen Sunnis even today long after the Soviet Union partly collapsed because they couldn't afford constantly fighting with the Sunnis in various Soviet States.
So, Putin is ready to let the Sunnis (in all countries kill all the Shias in all countries) or vice versa. Likely it will be both ways.
However, as crazy as this all sounds if it reduces the population in the middle east down to a level where people can survive once again life will be better for everyone left IF not too much infrastructure is destroyed during the next 20 to 50 years of middle east wars between Shias and Sunnis mostly now brought about by Putin's choices to let Syria go to Hell by keeping Assad in place there despite what any or all people in the world actually wanted.
So, basically the world can blame Putin for the 9 million displaced Syrians both in their country and outside of their country.
Basically, the collapse in Syria and now Iraq are mostly caused by Putin's policies at this point.
However, the failed state that Yemen is becoming is mostly about Saudi Arabia and Iran fighting a proxy war there. In a proxy war a democracy of and by the people will always fail that the proxy war is in caused by two or more larger powers.
