Two people swim back to their overturned kayak after a whale nearly landed on them near Moss Landing. (Sept. 12, 2015)

MOSS LANDING, Calif. —"That was heavy," Captain Michael Sack said. Possibly 40 or 50 tons heavy.
Sack was guiding a Sanctuary Cruises whale watching tour from a boat just outside Moss Landing harbor on Saturday when he witnessed an incredible, dangerous situation.
Tandem kayakers were paddling through a large pod of humpback whales that were gorging on krill and anchovy bait balls.
One whale launched its body into a full breach, and to people watching from the boat, it appeared the whale landed on top of a man and woman who were sharing a kayak.
The breach was captured on video. Watch above or mobile users click here.
"Two kayakers were almost crushed to death by a massive, near full-size humpback whale," Sack said.
"A large aggregation of humpbacks (were) feeding. There were also a lot of kayakers right in the middle of it all. The next thing we knew, this thing launched right on top of these two kayakers. It was very scary to watch," he said.
The man and woman were knocked out of their kayak and underwater. They were both wearing life vests, and fellow kayakers helped them get back to shore safely.
The couple were lucky that they did not suffer direct impact from the whale's massive body, Sack added.
"Kayaking with whales can be extremely dangerous," he said. "This was one of the more dangerous situations that I've seen out here. I'm not sure if at this point these two know how lucky they were."
Humpbacks are not the largest animals in the world, that distinction goes to blue whales, which are also swimming through the Monterey Bay right now. Humpbacks, however, can still grow to 62 feet long, and weigh as much as 50 tons, according to researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
In a situation of humpback vs. human in kayak, there's no question who would lose.
"One should realize that humpback whales are wild animals and totally unpredictable. It's a very uncontrolled environment out there," Sack said.
