A man was arrested at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas on Saturday after he attempted to grab a police officer's gun, the U.S. Secret Service told The Daily Beast. According to a federal agent in an unsealed criminal complaint, Michael Steven Sandford wanted to use it to kill the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
Special Agent Swierkowski, named in the complaint in U.S. District Court in Nevada, said Sandford told officers he drove from California to kill Trump. He also practiced shooting at a Las Vegas gun range the day before, added Swierkowski, whose first name was redacted. Sandford had a U.K. driver's license.
In a statement to The Daily Beast, the U.S. Secret Service confirmed the details of the encounter with local law enforcement. The agency also told The Daily Beast that Sandford was charged with unlawful entry and assault. According to the complaint, he was planning an assassination attempt for a year and planned on dying while carrying it out.
"Additional charges are pending and this investigation continues by the Secret Service and our law enforcement partners," the statement reads. "As this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot provide further details."
