DENVER — A 5-year-old was in fair condition early Saturday after a mountain lion attacked him in his family's yard about 10 miles northwest of Aspen, Colo.
The
boy suffered injuries to his head, neck, and face in the 8 p.m. MT
Friday attack, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff's Office.
The
child and his older brother were outside playing when the boys' mother,
who was inside their house, heard her son start screaming, according to
the sheriff's office. The woman ran outside, saw the mountain lion on
top of her child, fought off the animal and pulled her son out of its
grip.
The mother sustained minor injuries to her hand and
legs. The boy's father drove the child to Aspen Valley Hospital for
treatment
The
boy was brought to Children's Hospital here via helicopter, Aspen
Valley Hospital officials said. No names have been released
Pitkin
Sheriff's deputies and a U.S. Forest Service officer went to the home
and spotted a mountain lion nearby. A short time later, the Forest
Service officer killed mountain lion.
Parks and Wildlife officials are on scene to examine the dead mountain lion and continue their investigation.
Officers also are looking for second mountain lion that had been spotted in the area earlier Friday.
Mountain lions generally avoid humans but are attracted to pets and other domesticated animals, according to the nonprofit Mountain Lion Foundation in Sacramento, Calif. Most people can drive a mountain lion away if they fight back when one attacks. Follow Darren Whitehead on Twitter: @NewsDarren
