“I may or may not have gone to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in a Sith robe.”
That’s Bill Kristol’s chosen independent candidate for President, National Review writer David French. French, while not well-known to America, is well-known in conservative circles for his memorable speeches, especially to college audiences.
I went back to his last speech in February at Young America’s Foundation’s Freedom Conference in Nashville, looking to brush up on his beliefs. What I found was, well, let’s say colorful.
A few minutes into his speech, French brought up the newest Star Wars film as a metaphor to being a conservative on a liberal college campus. A student earlier in the conference had called campus conservatives “the Rebel Alliance.”
But to French, the Rebel Alliance were the bad guys and “The Sith are these freedom fighters against the galactic U.N.”
Certainly an unconventional view, but not unheard of. It got weirder.
“The Sith, however, take power from the suffering of their enemies,” he said, comparing the Rebels vs. Sith battle to his time studying at Harvard under a liberal professor.
French said when he stood up to his liberal professor during a class discussion, the students in the class started yelling at him.
“They’re all screaming at me,” French said. “I feel this ‘YESSSS.’ ‘MORE.’ ‘UNLIMITED POWER!'” he continued, screaming awkwardly as he quoted Emperor Palpatine.
While Donald Trump has had some crazy moments in this campaign, screaming and acting — even in jest — as the Emperor isn’t exactly the definition of presidential. Some may find his humor relatable; others may find it further proof of how unserious French’s bid would be.
“I may or may not have gone to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in a Sith robe with a red lightsaber,” French concluded.
French’s full remarks to YAF are below. The Star Wars section starts at 17:30, but the entire speech is an interesting insight into the potential candidate.
