It will be in the interests of the car makers to "Game the Technology" against the human drivers

As someone who can program computers (when I want to) I know it is possible for car companies to "Game the system" against the drivers thereby preventing liability to the companies making the cars for any accident. For example, the air bag controversy you will notice that Takata Airbag Company is still in business even after it is proven that their airbags (likely all of them throughout many years) are defective. And yet, newer (safe) airbags are not necessarily available for all cars yet. So, likewise, programmers could  "Game the system" to make the driver liable instead of the companies making the cars in regard to autopilots very easily. And likely some will do this in the future.

It is to the advantage of car makers to keep a human driver in the loop because when the human driver moves outside of the loop the car company is going to be liable for everything ever after (or the maker of the hiways (the state). Personally, I want to be driving the car myself as long as I am able to. And after that maybe I'll just tell the car where I want to go that day and let it drive me. However, I would also know as a programmer that doing this is always a risk. But, from what I've seen happen to my own mother, not going anywhere because she gave up her license in her mid 80s only resulted in an earlier death for her than was necessary.

Keeping mobile is part of what keeps people alive. The interestingness of ongoing adaptability in new situations makes life interesting enough to keep living ongoing for longer and longer lifetimes for human beings here on earth.
