ST. JOSEPH, MICH. - Two court bailiffs were shot and killed by an inmate at the Berrien County Courthouse before police returned fire on the suspect, killing them.
"Brave officers" took down the shooter, said Sheriff Paul Bailey during a news conference Monday, July 11.
A county deputy and a civilian also were shot but injured, according to a news release. Those injured were taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph for treatment.
Michigan State Police, county officers and other police agencies responded to the shooting around 2:30 p.m.
A Berrien County Commissioner told WZZM's ABC affiliate WBND reporter Vahid Sadrzadeh on scene that a man who was on his way to jail took a gun off a deputy and started opening fire.
An employee at the prosecutor's office told WZZM the courthouse had been under lockdown since the shooting, and workers were being kept in their offices.
Authorities have not released the names of victims nor any details of the shooting suspect. Another news conference is slated for 6 p.m.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder tweeted that police have secured the scene at the courthouse and have begun their investigation. Later in the afternoon, he announced he's heading to St. Joseph.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Michigan, tweeted the following:
"Horrible news out of Berrien County just now. I am monitoring the situation closely and my heart breaks for everyone affected."
