A nutjob with an AK-47 assault rifle took five people hostage inside a New Jersey housing project early Saturday — but set them free unharmed after a tense standoff with police, officials said.
A SWAT team descended on the apartment on South St. near Dawson St. in Newark about 1:45 a.m.
The hostage taker, who never fired his weapon, finally surrendered to police about 8 a.m., officials said. His name was not immediately released.
"The team eventually gained access and captured the suspect who is now being evaluated at a crisis unit," Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.
The assault rifle was found in the apartment along with ammunition, Ambrose said.
His hostages were not harmed, officials said.
