You might not know this but the following countries will fine you if you are a citizen of their country and you don't vote:
Turkey
Egypt
Australia
Most countries in South America
Mexico
And this is why there is a movement to fine people here if they don't vote too.
Because it forces everyone to become informed and to vote their conscience. It is found that everyone
tends to educate themselves about their countries more when they are forced to vote or pay a fine.
In Australia, for example, it's a 20 Dollar fine if you don't vote which is comparable to a parking ticket many places here in the U.S.
Why would they want to fine eligible voters here in the U.S.?
Because only 53 percent of eligible voters voted in the 2012 presidential elections.
Because of fines, 90% of Australian voted in their last elections.
jury and taxes are both mandatory so why not voting?
In Sweden citizens are automatically registered to vote and turnout is the highest in the OECD.
Oregon is the only state where everyone is registered to vote when they get a driver's license.
Or Estonia which allows online voting.
