Hearing the Trees "Crack" in the winds

I was outside this morning walking my puppy around the yard (Blue Merle Corgi female puppy) and heard a loud Crack in a very tall tree next door which didn't give me a lot of confidence to be outside right then in 20 to 30 mph winds with 50 mile per hour gusts. So, I walked around my backyard to the other side of the house where there is a tree slowly coming down onto our front driveway. Yes. We have asked permission to remove it but haven't been given permission yet from a local Arborist. Where we live large trees are all protected so you can't just cut down trees willy nilly (although I suppose there are always some people that don't obey the laws. But, you can limb trees that are a problem. The only problem for me is all the heavy weight of the big pine tree that will eventually come down is in it's very top so in big winds all this weight is just moving the tree slowly to the ground so it's so far at about a 15 degree angle off of center. I have moved my daughter's car out of the way of it if it falls but if it does come down before we legally have it removed sometimes these old trees sort of explode when they hit the ground sending pieces of branches everywhere. So, this could be a problem too. But, hearing the loud crack next door from a very tall eucalyptus tree didn't feel very good either. But, then again, this is the time of year big trees always come down the most (January or February) in winds 50 to100 mph usually. Last year while we stayed away in Santa Barbara 100 big trees blew down where we live. I couldn't believe it until I drove back and surveyed the area. But, they were right. On one golf course at least 75 trees went down and I had found about 35 others while driving into my property from Highway 1 near the ocean.

We have a very strong roof so I'm not worried about a big tree coming into our main roof because this happened to this house before we moved here. Since our house has a Cement tile roof it is a permanent roof. But, you have to "overbuild" a house to carry such a roof too. So, when a tree fell across this roof (a big one) it didn't collapse the roof because of how strongly built it was to begin with for the Cement tile carrying roof.
