In regard to earthquakes: (for long term Californians)

Earthquakes are happening most of the time in California every day. But, you don't usually notice them much or at all until they get into the high 3.0s. By 4.0 and above you can begin to get things falling off walls and cement foundations cracking a little bit but usually it won't break windows. By 5.0 windows can break and it could be unsafe on a Freeway from a 5.0 or above. By 6.0 Freeway over passes could break or come down some places and pavement might break up some places. When you get to 7.0s then people die more and more. When you get to 8.0 thousands of people might die. When you get to a 9.0 tens of thousands of people might die. I haven't been in an earthquake personally bigger than 7.0s and then I thought I was in a nuclear blast and was going to die.

So, we don't really usually start worrying until we get 4.0s and 5.0s. By 6.0s we are all scared even as Californians because we know we are in trouble. But, we usually don't take earthquakes seriously until they are at least at a 4.0 or 5.0 level.

Like I said the scariest earthquake I personally was physically in was the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake.
