If you dig down and build a bigger basement home of metal or cement or both that you can live in in case your above ground house burns down or blows down this might be a good idea. HOWEVER, if you are living in a flood plain this might not be the best idea unless you are building some type of submarine type of basement area where the water won't flood you too. You might need a metal shaft above the highest flood level you have ever had their historically or this wouldn't be a good idea either. And even then if you were in flooding you would want a boat tied to the metal shaft to above the highest flood level historically in your area.
Another idea is to buy something like a Mercedes Sprinter as a back up if there are only two of you or a larger motor home that you can escape your home in in an emergency of either fires or flooding or tornadoes too.
Having something you can cook and sleep in and get warm in in an emergency might be more and more helpful over time as a back up plan for you and your family. Or you need to reach out to family in case your home burns down so you could stay with them in a fire or flood or hurricane or tornado or even and earthquake if you are in some place like the West Coast where we have earthquakes that can be very big.
