Though there are animals and plants going extinct right now all over the earth (at least all the animals and birds and fish going extinct will be transferred from about 1000 to 2000 years ago or now forward in time until well after humans are reduced below 1 billion by 2100AD.
This appears to be what is actually happening here on earth this century.
Global Climate changes and starvation from Global Climate changes will be the major cause of people being thinned out.
People will not be able to afford to buy something to eat so if they don't have land and water to grow food for themselves without people stealing all their food people will tend to die worldwide from starvation one by one this century.
So, the primary cause of the depopulation of earth will likely be starvation. So, owning land and having water rights often will be the difference between your family surviving or not worldwide.
