I didn't sleep enough last night so took a nap this morning to make up for it. Woke up to wind blowing pretty hard and seeing snow blowing off roofs around where we are staying. Luckily the heater works good and we still have light and power. I have been here with 3 feet of snow on my truck and it was hard to even move the truck a few feet then until a snow plow came. But, luckily (at least for now) we don't need sleeping bags to stay warm with no heat or lights. I think the snow is the wrong kind of snow to bring down power lines anyway so I think we are okay this late in the year. It's very fluffy powdery snow and usually it's wet snow and ice buildup that brings down power lines in weather like this. So, I think we are okay so far.
But, chains are needed from 3 miles below Dunsmuir to get up to Weed and Yreka now too. So, if you don't have 4 wheel drive or chains you probably don't want to go past Redding heading north on Interstate 5.
However, you could go until they tell you to turn back just south of Dunsmuir if you want to also. Just know the snow is making the roads a complete mess and might be impassable for most vehicles that are not 4 wheel drives or all wheel drives right now. Not sure when these conditions will change.
Check with CALTRANS road conditions online for Interstate 5 to find out more.
